Tree Planting in Grand'Anse Haiti

The Historical Significance and Current Vulnerability of Grand’Anse in Southern Haiti

In its historical context, Southern Haiti’s Grand’Anse was a beacon of ecological richness, contributing significantly to the grandeur of Pic Macaya. This region was once a vital source of oxygen, a model of ecological diversity, teeming with a wide array of plants and animals, including fruit trees, ornamental specimens, and lush forests. It served as a granary for the nation and a thriving habitat for its inhabitants. Regrettably, a series of unfortunate events, including the devastating Hurricane Matthew of 2016, coupled with unsustainable logging practices, mangrove deforestation, and the reckless exploitation of wood resources, have collectively cast a dark shadow over this once-vibrant ecosystem, placing it in a precarious state of vulnerability.
